The ridge on which present day Rothwell stands, overlooking the gentle Ise Valley, has witnessed the comings and goings of successive

generations. Four thousand years ago Bronze Age mourners buried their dead alongside offerings of food in vessels. The Romano-British

people, two thousand years later, built a settlement in what is now Rothwell. Dark Age invaders came next and founded the Danish

settlement of "Rodewell" or "place of the red well", presumably so-called because of the area's many freshwater springs coloured red by

iron and other minerals.

By the early Middle Ages Rothwell, or "Rowell" as it is known locally, was already a town of some importance, dominating the then smaller

settlement of Kettering (a state of affairs which persisted until the arrival in Kettering of the railway). A charter, granted by King John in AD

1204 permitting a weekly market and annual fair, confirmed the trade. Both a market and a fair are still extant. The market is held every

Monday and the fair, called "Rowell Fair", takes place on Market Hill during the week following Trinity Sunday.

The town has a rich history and possesses a large parish church, the longest in the county and complete with bone-crypt, and the Market

House built by Thomas Tresham in 1578. Rothwell was once one of the three largest towns in Northants, the other two being Northampton

and Stamford (which is now in Lincolnshire). Rothwell is also on the pilgrimage route from the former Benedictine Abbey at Peterborough to

Northants has a long history of shoemaking dating back to the 15th Century, when assizes (decrees) regulated prices for cordwainers (the

medieval name for shoemakers).

Northampton’s suitability for shoemaking was down to a good supply of material (a large cattle market!) and its central location for

distribution. In 1642 a group of shoemakers won a contract to supply the army, and by 1841 the shoe industry had grown to nearly 2000

shoemakers, although the process of making shoes had differed little from earlier centuries.

Shoemakers usually had workshops in their homes, where wives and children helped out and often worked on Sundays to have more cash

for the pub on Sunday nights. But they had to be highly literate, keeping records and conforming to measurements to ensure that shoes

fitted correctly.

By the mid 19th century certain shoemakers were described as 'manufacturers', employing a large number of shoemakers, supplying them

materials and selling the finished product to buyers. Businessmen recognised that mechanisation meant profit, which meant more factory

hands and less shoemakers, leading to the mechanisation dispute of 1857-59.

In 1858, the Northampton Boot and Shoe-makers Mutual Protection Society was formed to oppose mechanisation, and in 1859 when the

manufacturers of Northampton issued a statement confirming that machines to close shoe uppers were to be introduced, the Society called

a strike urging shoemakers to seek work outside of Northampton. However, the strike failed as many shoemakers did not object to

machines if they didn't threaten their jobs.

Just as business was returning to normal, the construction of Isaac, Campbell and Co’s factory in 1859 changed everything. The factory

wanted all of its shoemakers to work inside the factory and tried to entice them with appeasements. However, the fixed wages and hours

represented an end to the workers’ autonomy and it failed. But in 1861 the Turner Brothers took over, and four years later they were

producing 100,000 pairs of shoes a week using steam engines. The shoe factory had arrived. (Last updated: 29/07/2020 09:12:33)

She was the thirteenth child of thirteen, but never knew some of her siblings who had died before she was born.

During WW2 their house on Radford Road, Coventry was bombed by the Germans. Quite simply, the bomb went straight down the chimney

pot and completely destroyed the house, leaving both terraced houses, either side, untouched. Fortunately my grandparents were in the

local air raid shelter so were safe. Unfortunately, my Grandma had taken off her wedding ring & left it in the house, so it disappeared. The

house was subsequently rebuilt & they moved back in. Some 40 years later my grandfather found the ring whilst gardening.

As a child, my father would take me every week to visit Grandma & Granddad. The routine would be that we would spend the first half hour

at the house & then the men, me included, would go off to the local Social Club. I remember Grandma would spend the whole of my time

with her, whisking the mix for the Yorkshire pudding. When we then returned to drop Granddad off home after his beer, she would insist that I

had a piece of her now cooked Yorkshire. It was amazing. Only problem was that by the time we got home, I was too filled up with pudding

to eat my mum's roast dinner, which most definitely didn't please her!! (Last updated: 26/06/2020 14:18:35)
