Expert On Tobacco, Dies

Mathews, May 31 1947 - John Grasty Covington, 60, retired tobacco expert of the British-American Tobacco Co. in China and India, died at

his home, Holly Point Park, at 5:30 tonight.

A native of Danville, he had lived in Mathews the past 15-1/2 years, settling when he retired in 1931, chosing Mathews because he liked the

sea and boats. He spent 20 years in the tobacco business. He was educated in the public schools and the Danville Military academy; was a

member of Christ Episcopal church; a charter member of the Ruritan club, and helped organize the first volunteer fire company in Mathews.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Louise (Caws) Covington; a daughter, Patricia Geraldine Covington; two sisters, Mrs. Eva Dodd and Mrs.

Orrie Covington of Washington; two half-sisters, Miss Sallie Covington and Mrs. Fannie Howard of Danville; a niece, Mrs. Thomas Kirk of

Charlottesville.

Funeral will be held at 2 Monday afternoon at Christ Episcopal church, Kingston parish, Mathews county. The Rev. Danny Hutton, rector,

assisted by the Rev. Palmer Campbell, former rector, will officiate. Burial will be made in the church cemetery"(Last updated: 11/09/2020

o'clock this morning of Mrs. John G. Covington at the General hospital, where she had been a patient for several weeks.

Mrs. Covington was born at Bonn, Germany and came to this country as a young bride, having married J. F. Irby while he was a student at

Bonn University. Of this marriage, one son survives, J. F. Irby of Baltimore who was in attendance upon his mother during her sickness and

death. After the death of Mr. Irby, his widow came to Danville to become a member of the faculty of Roanoke Female (now Averett) College

and was head of the department of art and German.

In 1885 she married John G. Covington of this city who survives her with the following children of this last union: John G. Covington, Jr., and

Randolph B. Covington, both of Monghyr, India; George W. Covington, Ratcliffe I. Covington and Miss Johanna Covington of this city and

Mrs. Kenneth Dodge, Brooklyn, N. Y. and Mrs. Wallace S. Duvall, Greensboro, N. C.

Mrs Covington was highly esteemed as a woman of culture, broad sympathies and devotion to home, duty and friends. She was a member

of the First Baptist Church of this city.

The funeral services will be held at the residence, 866 Grove Street on Sunday at 3:30 p. m. and the interment will be in Green Hill
