Emigrated with his brother Robert (10976) from Maryland via the Ohio River to
Burlington KY where they arrived at the time war
was declared against the British and the
Indians in the war of 1812. Both enlisted in the Kentucky Militia and fought at
the seige of Ft.
Meigs. Both
brothers were discharged from the army at Burlington and eventually crossed the
Ohio River and settled at Rising Sun IN.
He was a
farmer and in 1815 purchased 82.37 acres of land legally described as the NW
1/4 Sec 14 T4N R2W located in Washington
township,
Dearborn Co IN and physically described as 1 1/4 miles north of Hartford (then
known as Laughery) and across the ford in
Laughery
Creek, on the west side of Cole Lane road.
In 1833 he
sold the farm and bought land in Illinois with land grants issued to him for
his military service. The land is believed to have been
located in
Crane Creek Township, Mason Co IL. Upon his return to Indiana his eldest son
George (10966) contracted a fever (probably
Typhoid)
and died June 8 1833. Two months later Thomas developed the same fever and

suddenly Wednesday morning at 3.00. He was sick
only 6
days, being taken sick while going to Belvidere last Thursday morning. He will
be buried at Belvidere Thursday the 7th inst."

native of Rising Sun. His early boyhood and
manhood
were passed in the village, as were his maturer years. He received the benefit
of the excellent schools which Rising Sun was
fortunate
in having, then completed his education at Miami University, located in the
town of Oxford, Ohio,
In early
life he was employed as a clerk in some of the village stores, for a time was
clerk on a steamboat, edited and published a weekly
newspaper
styled the Rising Sun Blade, and subsequently the Madison Courier. As editor of
the Blade he played a conspicuous part in
affecting
the division of Dearborn County, and the formation of Ohio County. In the
absence of the sheriff, as deputy, Mr. Covington was the
officer who
organized the new county, and served as its first auditor.
He later
represented the legislative district, composed of the counties of Switzerland
and Ohio, in the State Legislature. He was admitted to
the bar at
Rising Sun, in 1845. While a resident of that place, he was for a time engaged
in the Ohio River trade, and was connected with
the Rising
Sun Insurance Company. His name is identified with the growth and improvement
of the city which he yet retains great interest in,
and most
kindly feeling for her citizens. To such an extent is this the case that he
keeps up his identity with the place, and is probably better
posted in
the history of Rising Sun and the surrounding country, than any man in it, as
the reader of the foregoing general history may infer
from the
copious quotations from his writings.
He married
his wife in Rising Sun, who was a Miss Hamilton, a daughter of one of the
merchants of the village. Of Mr. Covington's more
recent
life, reference can be found in the chapter on journalism, in the history

He is

father in his recently purchased farm. In 1895,
following
the arrival at the farm of his brother and his new wife plus children from her
previous marriage, he moved the family to the town of
Edgar NE
where he was employed as a steam engineer in a food packing factory and also
ran a dray business. In 1900 he moved the
family
again, this time to Vinton in Iowa, where he bagan employment as a steam
engineer with the Iowa Electric generating plant on 12 Oct
1900.
In 1908 he
was for a short time employed as steam engineer at a button factory in
Muscatine IA while his family remained in Vinton. Later he
returned to Anamosa IA but soon moved the
family to Anamosa IA late in 1908. They lived temporarily over the Scrogg's
Saloon at the
southwest
corner of Main and Garnovilla streets and later moved to the residence at 194
Cedar Street.
In 1914 he
was transferred to the Iowa Electric plant in Maquoketa IA and moved his family
shortly thereafter. They lived in a house on Olive
Street. He

George B Covington, adjutant of the Seventeenth
Indiana
Volunteers (Wilder's Mounted Infantry). was wounded in an engagement near
Dallas, Ga., on the 24th of May 1865. The regiment
was forming
in the line of battle, and Lieut. Covington was engaged in correcting the line
when he was shot by a rebel sharpshooter. The ball
entered the left breast, passed through the
left lobe of the lungs and lodged in the spinal column. The surgeon pronounced
the wound
inevitably
fatal, and the only hope was that he might possibly live to see home. Wheeler's
rebel cavalry had made a raid in the rear of our
army, so
that he could not be started home till the 30th. He had to be transported in an
ambulance a distance of thirty miles, to Kingston,
where he
was put on the cars for Chattanooga. While on the cars, between Dalton and
Resaca, on the 1st of June, he died.
The detail
which had started home with him had, under instructions of Col. Wilder, in
event of death on the way home, the body embalmed at
Chattanooga and brought on to Nashville, where
they were met by Lieut. Covington's parents. The body was brought to this city
and interred
on the 9th inst. George B. Covington was born
in Rising Sun, March 28, 1845, so that he had but a short time since entered
upon his
twentieth
year.
He first
entered service on July 4, 1861, and went to West Virginia with Col. (now
General) Hascal, then commanding the Seventeenth. He
afterward
returned home, but rejoined the regiment, then under Col. Wiler, September,
1862, and was with Col. Wilder at the several days
battle at
Mumfordsville, and was, at the surrender of that place, made a prisoner. He was
exchanged at the same time with Col. Wilder, in
November,
and proceeded with him to the front, and was in various engagements proceeding
the battle of Stone River.
The brigade
commanded by Col. Wilder, being mounted, was assigned hazardous duties, and was
engaged in a great many skirmishes,
some of
which, in other times, would be set down as battles of considerable importance.
It was Wilder's brigade that checked the rebel
advance at
Chickamauga when Davis' and McCook's divisions fell back, and dealt such deadly
shots into the rebel lines. The brigade being
armed with Spencer rifles, six-shooters, felt
themselves competent to cope with six rebel brigades, and they did even more at
Chickamauga.
It was for gallant conduct at this battle that Col. Wilder had Lieut. Covington
promoted to the adjutancy of the Seventeenth.
Lieut.
Covington fell at his post and in the discharge of his duty. H made no
complaint of his fate.
During the
several days he was detained in starting home, after being wounded, the battles
were continued, and he was within hearing the
roar of
cannon and the rattle of musketry. He several times remarked that he wished he
was able to be with his regiment. He met death
calmly and
quietly, as he had often braved dangers. He felt that he was about to die in a
holy cause and in the conscientious discharge of a
noble duty.
His last words, sent through Col. Wilder to his friends at home, were 'Tell
father and mother that I have tried to do my duty, and
that I die
a Christian soldier.'
The large
and solemn concourse that attended his funeral asserts the estimation in which
he was held here, the place of his birth, and the
fondness
with which his memory will be cherished by those who knew him." On the day
of his funeral at Rising Sun, both the circuit court and
the commissioner's court, both of which were
in session, adjourned to attend the funeral, , and that, on motion of Judge
Downey, suitable
testimonial
to his character was placed upon the records of the circuit court, and a like
testimonial, on motion of Henry Brown, one of the
commissioners,

(is now a parking lot). Went to Anamosa High School 1 Sep 1923 and graduated on
30 May 1927. Later the same year he
moved in with
brother Neil Yates and his wife in Freeport IA and his first job was with the
Burgess Battery Co. He then worked at the
Freeport
Electric Shop. He says he then "faked" his way to being an
electrician first class and moved to Aurora IL and worked for the May
Electric
Co.
His next
move in 1930 was to Gary IN where he worked for the National Tube Co, but was
laid off as the depression hit in 1932 so at age 23
he returned to Anamosa IA where he did some
odd electrical jobs and cut wood at the local timber yard. In 1933 he worked
for Metcalf
Electric
Co, before joining the Civilian Conservation Corps at their camp in Maquoketa
IA on 2 Apr 1934 at a salary of $30 per month.. The
camp moved
to Cascade IA on 12 Aug 1934 and it was here that he met Catharine Bisenius who
was to later become his wife. On 17 Oct
1934 the
camp moved to a new location at Sigourney IA.
The
depression was lifting by 1935 so he decided to leave the U.S. government and
he was discharged to take up work at Hall Mfg Co.
This was temporary
and on his 26th birthday he began work for the local Sears store as a radio and
refridgeration repair man travelling an
area of
about 75 miles around Cedar Rapids.
They
married at St Mary Church in Cascade IA with Msgr. Albers performing the ceremony.
The reception was at her parents home and
they took a
short honeymoon trip to Canada via Detroit for one week. They returned to Cedar
Rapids.
Sears
transferred him to the buying offices in Chicago on 24 Jun 1940 and they lived
with her sister and her husband Harry and Hilda
Rupkey
prior to moving into an apartment in Oak Park IL. By 1948 they had 3 children
and needed a bigger home so bought a new house
under
construction in Brookfield. They moved in 15 Nov 1948.
He finally
retired from Sears after 35 and a half years on 31 Jan 1972. His second
marriage took place at the Sacred Heart Church in
LaPorte IN.
He sold the home in Brookfield and also his 2nd wife's home in Laporte IN using
the funds to buy a new model home in Cougar
Drive in
1972. In 1973 he purchased an unimproved property at Bella Vista AR on a large
lake retirement area.
He and
Helen travelled extensively from 1974 to 1985 all over the U.S. actively
seeking information about his early Covington relations.
Even after
Helen's death in 1985 he continued to travel and wintered in Florida until
1992. He had suffered a stroke on 19 Mar 1984 which
by 92 was
affecting his equilibrium and this ruled out long driving. Walking with a cane
was satisfactory until 20 Aug 1994 when the use of a
walker was
made necessary.
His work on
the Covington History has been catalogued in a number of volumes: Vol 1 -
Runion, Drake, Ross, Howell and Yates. Vol 2 - The
Covington Families. Vol 3 - The Lisle
Covington Family. Vol 4 - Copies of ol diaries including The Rising Sun

Covington was stricken with a heart attack while in a Salisbury restaurant and
was rushed to the hospital. He had a heart condition for
some time.

Bivalve, he had lived most of his life in White Haven. He was the son of the
late Guy Wesley and Lucy Robertson Covington. His
wife, Mrs.
Esther Evans Covington of here, survives.
Also
surviving are a son, Calvert Covington of Salisbury and several nieces.
Services
will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the Messick Funeral Home, Bivalve. The Rev. G.
Francis Wilson of the Quantico Methodist
Charge,
will officiate. Interment will be in the Robertson Cemetery here. [Body must

born in Whitehaven, MD, went to be with our Lord on Thursday,

13, 2014 surrounded by her loving family. "Cil" was defined by her
absolute devotion to "Eddie" and their five girls. Mrs. Smith
worked as a
secretary for the State of Delaware in the Quality Control Division. Prior to
that, she worked as a secretary at Haveg Chemical
Company.
Priscilla loved to solve cryptograms and crossword puzzles and was an avid
reader. She was a longtime member of Zion
Lutheran
Church where she sang in the church choir for many years. Priscilla also enjoyed
aquatic aerobics and traveling.

is survived by her beloved husband of 63 years, Edward A. "Hector"
Smith; five daughters, Christina S. Krieger & husband

Hospital soon after suffering an apparent heart attack at home. She moved to
Salisbury from Whitehaven about two and a half
years ago.
Born at
Clara, she was a daughter of the late Francis J. and Lucy Willing Evans. Her
husband Cecil C. Covington, died in 1964. Her only
son,
Calvert Covington, Whitehaven, died several years ago.
Surviving
are a brother, Marion F. Evans, Salisbury; two sisters, Mrs. Lucille Talbott
and Mrs. Florence Haughey, Baltimore, and several
nieces and
nephews.
Funeral
services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Messick Funeral Home, Bivalve.
The Rev. Warren Ford will officiate. Interment will be
in Oak
