By the end of the US Civil War almost all of the confederate arms and munitions were either manufactured in or distributed from Selma. The

town was centrally located, had rail connections and access to river navigation. There were approximately 10,000 civilians employed in

manufacturing.

Even though the town was well fortified the Confederate Army was widely scattered. There was a four mile breastwork around the town that

terminated at the river on both ends while fortifications on the north were aided by a large swamp. Defending the garrison was an almost

defeated and undermanned Confederate army commanded by Generals Forrest, Armstrong, Roddy and Adams. By this time the attitude

among the Confederate Generals was that the south was already defeated and any further resistance would only result in more unnecessary

casualties. Never the less it was decided that Selma would be defended.

It was important for the union army to capture Selma and cut off the supply line. General Sherman had previously made an attempt but was

turned back at Meridian. In the winter of 1865 General Grant selected Major General James H. Wilson to lead an attack with three well

equipped divisions of Cavalry consisting of nearly 1500 well trained men. The battle began around noon on April 2, 1865 and lasted well

into the night. Though most of the officers and men escaped there were over 2,000 men taken prisoner. For the next three days was burning
