Covington name when he became a freed slave.

In 1880 appears with first wife and 2 sons in Black Jack, Richmond Co NC next record to farmer, Alfred Baldwin Covington who it

presumed was his "owner" prior to the abolition of slavery.

In 1900 lived in Jackson, Crittenden Co AR employed as a Farm Hand. Described as a widower. After the death of his first wife he married

Obituary reads "PFC Hopson Covington, Born in Rockingham, NC, he was raised in Pennsylvania.

Private First Class Hopson Covington was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army Selective Service and a Draftee, PFC

Covington served our country until December 29th, 1967 in Tay Ninh, South Vietnam. He was 24 years old and was married. Hopson died

from an undetermined explosion. His body was recovered. Hopson was born on October 20th, 1943 in Richmond County, Rockingham,

North Carolina. PFC Covington is on panel 32E, line 091 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for less

than a year.

A Buck County Soldier was killed by enemy fire in Vietnam Combat. Army PFC Hopson Covington, 24, of 1106 Court J, Bristol Terrace,

Bristol, was married and the father of two girls, Brenda, 5 and Lisa, 4. He died December 22nd of wounds suffered a week earlier. A native

of Rockingham, N.C., he had lived in Bristol, most of his life and was a graduate of Delhaas High School. He will be buried Sunday in

Rockingham after services Friday evening at the Community Baptist Church in Bristol. Article taken in part from The Philadelphia Inquirer on

January 4, 1968. Jim McIlhenney."

Hopson "Sneak-a-Peek" was the son of Mr Thomas Covington, one of my Dad's close friends. Sneak was one of the first (or maybe even

the first) African American in Bucks County, PA, killed in action during the Vietnam era. I remember attending "Sneaks" funeral service

which was held at the Community Baptist Church in Bristol, PA. What I remembered most about the service was the emotional reaction of

his father. He said: "They took my son, he was my only son". It was so heart wrenching to see the late Mr. Tommy so distraught at the loss of

his only son. "Sneak", you are remembered. Doll Hargrove.

He served with Alpha Company, 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, "Tropic Lightning", USARV.

He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Vietnam Service

Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal and The Good Conduct Medal. (Last
