through doors.
He believed someone was trying to steal his
hogs one night, so he and his wife Minnie, went to check on them only to find
the hogs snoring.
He bought a new chain-saw from the local
co-op, took it home and was going to clean out some shrubs. His wife told him
not to, because
there were
coke cans in it. He ignored her, hit the cans and the chainsaw caught him
across the leg and almost cut it off. He was in surgery
for seven
hours, in a cast for eight weeks and doctors told him would never walk again,
However he had a very determined wife who gave
him therapy
every day and he did walk again.
He used to
carry a gun, but wife Minnie made him keep it in the trunk of his car. He
retired after being a driller for Appalachian Mining Co.
He was
never in the armed forces and is buried at Little Flat Creek Cemetery, in the
Taylor plots. Had a son before he met Minnie. (Last

Dear Mrs
Simpson
A home
visit with Rev Archie Covington, Minister to the Church of God congregation in
Glade City was made on March 9, 1962. Rev. Archie
Covington is four or five years younger than
Glenn Covington, your client, and was most helpful in describing the circumstances
preceding
the
specific events about which you ask confirmation.
The
Covington family owned a small farm in eastern Tennessee and the father is
remembered as a large individual who worked ceaselessly
to support his family of four sons and two daughters
from his land and 75 acres which was share cropped.
Rev.
Covington related an incident where his father had been beside himself with
anger and frustration and had excessively punished
Glenn. The
physical condition of the boy was so serious that the mother had entreated her
husband to cease or to beat her rather than their -
son. Mr.
Covington had then struck his wife and upon realising what he had done had
rushed for his shotgun and had attempted suicide
which Mrs.
Covington and an older brother had prevented. Rev. Covington believes that the
marginal living conditions and the constant
struggle to
keep abreast financially was an ever-present anxiety to his father and he does
not recall that his oldest brother exhibited any
desire to
assume duties in supplementation of the fathers struggle to support the family.
Mr. Covington died in 1929 after a three day illness,
diagnosed as pneumonia.
Mrs. Verna
Covington (nee Hellard or Hillard) was then confronted with a marginal farm
operation to support six pre-adolescent. Children.
Four other
siblings had died while infants. The oldest brother was Glenn who was
inadequate to assume the responsibilities of head of the
home. His
attendance at the Beech Spring School was desultory and Rev, Covington has
doubt about Glenn having completed the sixth
grade. Here
again Glenn tried to assume the dominant rote by demands upon the younger
brothers which they would unite in resisting. It
was in one
of these fracases that Glenn had stabbed his brother in the arm.
At about
the same time Mrs. Covington had several hemorrhages. An uncle Lee moved into
the picture and arranged for the entrance of the
children to
the orphanage of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics in Tiffen, Ohio.
Glenn was too old to be entered in the
orphanage
and must have presented a problem to Uncle Lee who was physically large,
industrious with a strict code of ethics much in the
mould of
Mr. William Covington. Rev. Covington mused that Glenn had invited a neighbor
lad to spend the night. This had been contrary to
his
mother's wishes and in a sudden fury the frustrated youth had struck his
mother. Uncle Lee took over when told of this and Rev.
Covington
admitted that the beating he had administered to Glenn was better forgotten.
Uncle Lee had preferred charges for the stab
wound and
for the overt act against the mother and Glenn had been sent to a reform
school, name unknown.
Subsequent
contacts were infrequent although Glenn had been enlisted in the C.C.C. and
became a leader Rev. Covington believes. He.
was turned
down for army duty at the beginning of World War II supposedly because of very
bad teeth. Later, He had married and had
infrequent
contacts, the last about four years ago. Glenn has a large family and had
employment as a factory hand in or near Toccoa,
Georgia.
Rev.
Covington stated that the alias Robert Williams might be explained by the fact
that Glenn had approached him several times for
financial
help and active participation in business enterprises. Always Glenn had
pictured himself as the boss and entrepreneur which
caused Rev. Covington to decline
the opportunity. These ventures had never proved successful and hence the shift
in names. He does not
believe
there was any serious anti-social action behind the change in name. Archie was
some six years younger than Glenn but does not
remember
that "William" was part of Glenn's name.

Covington has a small church in one of the economically distressed area of
Pennsylvania. He has not had recent contacts with
his
siblings and the dates he suggested are approximate. He is interested in his
nieces and nephews and may possibly communicate with
you
regarding placement in event such action is indicated.

that we should work with the Agency there in Somerset, Pennsylvania. However,
we will share this information with you as we know
you are
interested in your brother. We have never been able to determine a family
relationship as Mr. Williams has not wanted to share
information
with us. At this time, we cannot recommend that you contact him and we
especially ask that you not let him know that our Agency
knows anything about his family members.
We will say
that even now Mr. Williams does not feel obligated to support his rather large
family. There are times when he is very violent. He
also
refuses any medical suggestions. There are nine children, seven of which have
been removed from their parent’s custody. We feel we
