Correspondence
from Michael Head in March 2003 states: "I am busy researching H. A
Covington & Son at the moment, having spent
Saturday at
the Guildhall Library and the Family Records Office. I am interested in
Covington genealogy in order to establish the origins of
the
company.
My major
interest is the activities of the company and its sailing barges. My
Grandfather was skipper of the Covington barges Pickwick and
Sam Weller.
Whilst my Father obtained his lighterman's licence from The Company of Watermen
and Lightermen, after serving an
apprenticeship
with Covingtons. I would very much like to write something on Covingtons and
that would be quite a challenge. Although they
ceased
trading only fifty years ago no one seems to know much about them. I have been
in contact with The Society for Sailing Barge
Research
and they have provided me with a Covington fleet list. However, they seem to know
very little else.
I am going
to apply for the death certificates of Henry and Harry Covington, to get the
exact dates of their deaths. I will then check the local
newspapers
for their obituaries. Harry died in 1936 and The Times of April 30th, of that
year recorded that he left £176,000. Proving for all
time the
adage "where there's muck there's brass". I will also get copies of
their wills. This could be interesting as the Covington fleet was
sold
shortly after Harry's death. Their better barges going to The London and
Rochester Trading Company. My Father always told me that
Covingtons
activities were taken over by William Cory the coal, rubbish disposal and
lighterage company. This is something else that will
have to be
checked.
I have the
Covington family living at 19 Streatham High Road in 1901. They appear to be
well set up with servants and a cook living in.
Another
citizen of Streatham at that time was Stenton Covington, who was a frequent
contributor to The Times letters page. Stenton had
property in
the Fowey area of Cornwall, which I believe he left to the nation on his death.
I have no connection as yet with Henry's family."

(The Basra
Memorial commemorates more than 40,500 members of the Commonwealth forces who
died in the operations in
Mesopotamia
from the Autumn of 1914 to the end of August 1921 and whose graves are not
known. The memorial was designed by
Edward
Warren and unveiled by Sir Gilbert Clayton on the 27th March 1929.
Until 1997
the Basra Memorial was located on the main quay of the naval dockyard at Maqil,
on the west bank of the Shatt-al-Arab, about 8
kilometres
north of Basra. Because of the sensitivity of the site, the Memorial was moved
by presidential decree. The move, carried out by
the
authorities in Iraq, involved a considerable amount of manpower, transport
costs and sheer engineering on their part, and the Memorial
has been
re-erected in its entirety. The Basra Memorial is now located 32 kilometres
along the road to Nasiriyah, in the middle of what was
a major
battleground during the first Gulf War. Casualties are listed under the
regiment they served with in rank order. The Panel Numbers
quoted
refer to the initial panel dedicated to the Regiment. If a further panel is

he left them in 1937. He then became a director of H. Covington & Sons,
Lightermen & Wharfingers, Cremorne Wharf, Chelsea.
The
business was eventually sold to Redlands in 1957.In 1948 he lived at 50 Garden
House, Marylebone, London.
His 2nd
wife was Swiss, she died 7/11/1949. He married again in South Africa, where
they lived until 1959. His hobbies include walking,
gardening
and ornithology. He has also travelled extensively, visiting nearly all
European countries, Central America, West Indies, South
America,
Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand and Malaysia.
In 1990, he
made his 38th trip to Switzerland. After WW2 he lived for 11 years in Cape
Province, South Africa where he owned the Regal
Cinema, Knysna,
before returning to Devon in 1959. Has since lived 5 years in Tenerife, 7 years
in Guernsey, 7 years in Ringwood, Hants
and in 1985
moved to his present address. In 1990, 3 Carlton Gate, Balcombe Road, Poole,
Dorset BH13 6DX. He writes; "You may be
interested
to know that I have a copy of the American Covingtons written by William
Slaughter Covington and printed in 1941.
He came to
London in WW2 and met my cousin to whom he gave 2 or 3 copies, mine being
no.187. He wrote a very detailed account,
including
the original English names and different spellings etc. I was particularly
interested as I was the only Englishman then living, who
was
mentioned in his book, as being well known as a cricketer at the time of
