Servant c.1759, Labourer c.1763. Transported to America 1768 for theft of sheep. Samantha Anderson writes of his trial; "Richard was charged on

17th March 1768 at the Summer Assizes at Hertford, with William Levit of the theft of a weather sheep worth 21 shillings. They were found guilty

and sentenced to hang. However they were later repreived and transported for 14 years.

They left on the "Justitia", mastered by Colin Somerwell in October 1768. There were 143 people on board, which was said to be one of the

flagships of its type. Nevertheless, living conditions were appaling, beatings and rape were commonplace and the ships were rife with disease. On

average 14% of the passengers died en route. His wife, Ann, also had an interesting criminal record (see her details).
