at Harrold. Said to have emigrated to the U.S. around 1645. Was in US before
Dec 26 1668. Said to have received lands
in 1670 for transporting
emigrants to the colonies. He patented land in 1687 on the Dragon Swamp,
between Covington's swamp and Chaney's
swamp, this was known as
the Quarter Plantation. And is located south of the present Tappahannock VA.
He owned 1000 acres
called Dragon Run and established Covingtons Mill in 1690 (the mill was rebuilt
in 1808 and still stands today in Essex
County)
1697 - The will of
William Covington dated 4 Nov 1696 was proved in court on 10 May 1697, Essex
County, Virginia, Deed Book 9, Page 105,
attested by Thomas
Haywarton & Thomas Watkins.. One of his daughters, name not known, married a William Brothers in 1683. He left
all his land
to his wife and 3 (?)
sons (richard, Thomas & William). He also left a cow to one EllinorCorpe,
who may have been his daughter, although this
relationship is not
mentioned in the will. A cow was also left to his grand-daughter Mary.

Howerton (often spelled Hayworten, etc.) of Virginia.
In reading your list,
here, it refers over and over to Dorothy, the wife of the emigrant William
Covington as a daughter of Thomas Howerton.
The Howertons don't have
any proof that she was a Howerton but we acknowledge an extremely close
friendship between the two men. She may
have been a sister, but
he was, by the existing records and deeds, a single man as late as 1670.
If she was not a
Howerton, the Covington records should reflect that her last name is unknown.
William and Thomas did
come to Virginia early, but as indentured servants transported by John and
George Mott. This information was compiled by
Howerton researcher, Bryan Howerton, whose
work in always documented. The data discovered is:
Thomas Howerton was born
about 1640 in England, exact location not yet discovered. He came to the
Virginia colony about 1663 as he was one of
313 people claimed as
"headrights" by the brothers Mott on 17 October, 1670. The Motts were
awarded a Patent for 15,564 acres of land on waters
draining into the
Rappahannock River as compensation for the indentured people whom they had
transported to the colony. William Covington, who
became a partner of Thomas Howerton, was
included in the group of people for whose transport the Motts received the land
patent.
So, in or around 1663,
the Covington ancestor and the Howerton ancestor arrived together, as
indentured men. We don't know the name of the wife
of Thomas Howerton, but
we know the first name of the wife of William Covington- it was Dorothy, but
she and Wiliam were contemporaries of
Thomas Howerton, not
younger!
By 1670, close to seven
years after arrival, William and Dorothy Covington and Thomas 'Haywarton' paid
3000 pounds of tobacco to a William
Richards for 300 acres
on Dragon Swamp.
We have never
established any proof that Dorothy was a Howerton. What is the Covington proof
of her surname? Thomas may not have even been
married in 1670, as
William and Dorothy sign as husband and wife, and Thomas Howerton signs alone,
the deed dated 10 October, 1670.
The land on Dragon Swamp
they bought as partners, is a part, evidently of the 15,564 acres that the
Motts were awarded.
On 3 April, 1683,
William Covington and Thomas Howerton were dividing the Dragon Swamp land. The
abstract I have seen on this Agreement to
divide omits the name of
Dorothy.
On 4 April, 1683,
"Agreement between Howerton and Covington to divide land from Mr. Mott.
Howerton to have land on the south side and
Covington to have land
on the north side of Dragon Swamp.
On 17 April, 1683;
Thomas Howerton witnessed a deed from William Covington to his brothers."

1697-1715 was
under-sheriff in Essex Co VA and listed as a Gentleman of Justice from
1699-1711. He was also County Surveyor and Coroner. Was
licensed to keep an
"ordinary" or a tavern, around 1702 and in same year recorded as a
member of the Virginia House of Burgess (a Colonial
Legislature).
1700 - Mary, widow of
Thomas, Captain Richard Covington and William Sutherland each appointed
guardian of one of Thomas's children, Essex Co
Deed Book, Page 75. In 1706, with 5 others, he
was granted 8000 acres in the great fork of the Mattapony River. It is also
believed that he travelled
with Lewis and Clark on
their second expedition.
1712 - Richard

his brother Thomas to Amelia County in 1740 and bought land there. He was sued
for debt in 1741 and again in 1746.
After his first wife
died, he returned to Essex County to marry a widow and then returned to Amelia.
In 1772 he sold his land, left his son William in
charge of collecting and
paying outstanding debts and moved to Edgefield County SC where he obtained
land on Sweetwater Creek.
He became a Captain in
the SC Militia and when the Revolution started their unit was engaged in the
siege of Augusta. This battle didn't involve
any British troops, but
was strickly between Loyalists and Patriots. William was assigned to General
Pickens to care for the sick. He was able to use his
own supplies to do this since he was less than
10 miles from home. After the war he put in a claim for about 60 pounds in
personal expenses and
was apparaently paid in
full. His will is in the state archives in Columbia SC (info from Bryan

His family lived in

Covington, d/o William and Rosamond. This
isn't quite proven, but
I was hoping to send this timeline to somebody researching this line to see
what they thought.
William Covington had
married a Rosamond unknown. William's will, proven in 1721, lists among others,
a minor daughter Ann.
Widow Rosamond Covington
remarries William Carroll after 1721, making Ann his step daughter. (Your
website seems to suggest that Caroll was her
maiden name, but really

Rosamond dies before
1731. Between 1728 and 1731, William will marry another Widow, Mary Gresham. So
now Ann Covington has two step
parents. She also picks
up a step brother, Robert Gresham.
In 1731, William and
Mary (Gresham) Carol, and Robert Gresham, sell their combined interest in
several properties to my ancestor, John Meritt. Very
strong hint of a family connection behind
these land sales and we have searched for it for months, eliminating many
possibilities.
In 1737, John sells
these lands, and his wife ANN relinquishes dower. First record of her name as a
Merritt.
We have looked for Ann
extensively. She is not a Gresham nor anybody else we know. She likely married
John before the 1737 record. Other records
make it appear that John Merritt has some kind
of connnection to the Covingtons by 1727, although a different line than Ann's.

I am suggesting that Ann
Merritt is in fact Ann Covington, d/o William and Rosamond. They are the same
age. John only came off his father's levy
in 1722, suggesting he
was born just after 1700. Very close to Ann Covington's age. And they have to
be right there together by at least 1731. It's
almost like Ann came
with the property. By her being a step daughter of William Carroll and step
brother to Robert Gresham, we have a
perfect
explanation for the the
apparantly family driven land sales to John Merritt. All these folks stick
together in later records.
John Merritt appears in
several other Covington records as well, as if he were some kind of family, but
none of that made sense until I saw this
connection. Although, he
may have a sister married to another Covington (Richard JR, cousin of William)
but that is for another story!
The only part of this I
cannot prove is that Ann is in fact Ann Covington. Preponderance of evidence
may be all I get.
I am hoping you or a
researcher you know might take a look at this and let me know what you think. I
can flesh out the timeline with actual records
and sources.

Thomas was the first of
the family to move west. He was a regular at the court house in Amelia. He
served on juries and Grand Juries, witnessed wills
and deeds, was sued for debts and sued others

road. He also had
one criminal charge
brought against him (for tippling on the Sabbath). The case was dismissed.

VIRGINIA
In the name of God,
Amen, I Thomas Covington, of St Marks Parish, Culpeper County, being very sick
and weak, but of sound mind. & memory,
thanks be to God for the
same, and calling to mind the uncertainty of this life do constitute this, and
this only, to be my last will and testament in
manner and form
following. Viz.:
Imprimis: I recommend my
soul to God, who gave it, trusting in and through the merits of Jesus Christ to
obtain perfect remission of all my sins in full
assurance of a joyful resurrection to Eternal
Life. & what worldly goods it has pleased almighty God to bestow on me
(after my just debts are paid) I
give and bequeath as
following:
Item. I lend to my
beloved wife, during her natural life, my lot of land in the town of Fairfax on
the main street thereof numbered seventeen,
whereon I now live
together with the appurtenances thereunto belonging. Also, her choice of all my
horses, mares & colts, her side saddle, and
furniture and one
[____?] bed and furniture, with what meat & [_____?] I shall leave.
Item. My will and desire
is that my track of land which I had of Col. William Green on the branches of
[Mountain?] & Muddy Run including
[Stonehouse?] Mountain
together with my two lots purchased of Mr. Robert Coleman in the said town
numbered seven & thirty-five. In a plan of the
said town, be sold by my
Executors hereafter mentioned.
Item. My further will
and desire is that the residue of my estate be divided between my beloved wife,
Elizabeth, and my beloved daughters Ann
Faver and Sarah Tutt to
them and their heirs forever. The lot of land lent my wife, after her decease
to be equally divided between my said
daughters and their
representatives.
Lastly, I do hereby
constituite & appoint my trusty & beloved friends: William Brown,
William Williams & John Green, Gentlemen, Executors of this
my last will and
testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal this fifth
day of December 1766.

references to Thomas & his 2nd wife Elizabeth Ann having lived in Cavan,
Ireland and suggestions that both children were born
there, but no facts to
fully substantiate that claim.

King Cerdic is the 37th
great grandfather of Edward Southworth, the first husband of Alice Carpenter,
my eight times great grandmother. Since I am
descended from the union
of Alice with Gov. William Bradford of the Mayflower, technically there is not
a direct relationship to Cerdic. However, it is
my pleasure to claim the indirect relationship
to Kings of such antiquity, and to know our daughter married into this line.
She and Steve are 34th
cousins, four times
removed.
Cerdic represents the
oldest identified ancestor of this writer, being in the 51st generation. That
means that an average generation for this line is less
than 30 years each.
It was said that Cerdic
and his son, Cynric, came into Britain on five ships about 495 AD. They were
one of those many nomadic Germanic tribes of
people whose barbarian
savagery and rough manner of life struck terror in the hearts of many peoples
where ever they were attacked across Europe.
He was a Saxon
earldorman who founded a settlement on the coast of what became known as
Hampshire, England.
By the time Cerdic was
born, according to tradition, St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, may
have already died in Saul on March 17, 461 or
maybe as late as 493.

Cerdic's forces conquered the Isle of Wright. Later in this year was when
Cerdic died. We all have heard of the illusive King Author

not an embodiment of several hero Kings, ruled
English land sides.

son of William Covington III and Ann Coleman. Many researchers record his wife
as one Frances Kavanaugh - though
documentation for this
seems lacking, various family records record her name as such. Her parentage is
undocumented - although many record her
as a daughter of
Philemon Kavanaugh Sr. or Jr. - Frances Kavanaugh Covington seems to have died
before this will was written]
In the name of God,
Amen, I William Covington of Culpeper County, being in a weak and low state of
health, but through the mercy of God is
restored my proper
senses, doth make this my last will and testament and revoking all other wills
heretofore made by me.
I give and bequeath to
my daughter Ellinor Hensley a certain tract or parcel of land adjoining John
Strother and the North side of the South Fork of
the Rush River being
part of one hundred acres I bought of the said John Strother, beginning at a
white oak standing on the river bank near a large
rock that runs into the
river thru a northerly course to a long line of marked trees to John Strothers
line to the river and up the river to the beginning
supposed to be about
fifty acres which said land I give to my daughter Ellinor and her heirs forever
be the same more or less.
Item - my will is that
all my land lying above the mouth of a small branch that comes round my upper
meadow empties into the river near opposite
to the upper end of
Francis Covingtons meadow setting of from a small hickory thence running
northerly to a line of marked trees beginning at two
red oaks and a white
oak, thence running near the course of the old field westerly to a white oak
and hickory sapling, thence a north course to John
Strother's line on my
back line, thence along the said line to my corner and my brother Richard
Covington, thence down a branch that is a line or
boundary between myself
and Richard Covington to the River, thence down the river to the beginning,
supposed to be about one hundred and fifty
acres, be the same more
or less, which said land I leave to be equally divided between my three
youngest daughters: Grizzel Cooper, Elizabeth
Covington, and Lucy
Covington, to them and their heirs forever.
Item - I give all the
rest of my land except the acres I reserve for a burial ground to my son Robert
Covington, to him and his heirs forever.
Item - I give my negro
man, Simon, to my son Robert Covington, to him and his heirs forever.
Item - My will is that
at my death, all my personal estate shall be equally divided between my
daughter Elizabeth Covington and Lucy Covington.
Item - I appoint my son
Robert Covington, Robert Hensley, and William Covington to be my executors to
this my last will and testament, in witness

again, in 1839, to saddlers. Both brothers later
migrated to Kentucky and Missouri.

his father's will for
him and his brother Richard to complete their education before the estate was
divided. He enlisted in the army during the war of
1812. South Carolina
raised 2 Regiments during the war named Youngblood's and Austin's. Austin's had
a 1st Lt named Richard Covington, and 3
Privates named Edmund,
Richard & William Covington.
There may have been
another family of Covingtons living in that part of the state, possibly related
to the Edmund Covington (6176) of Lunenburg
Co VA. William and
Richard later moved from Edgefield to Abbeville County and obtained land on the
Rocky River in the upper part of the county.
William remained there
until 1836 when he moved to somewhere near Columbus MS on Wolfe Rd. The family
farmed a large amount of land with
many slaves.
William had 2 slave boys
of whom he was fond and named them Little Aaron & Big Aaron. He wrote his
will in 1855. By that time all his children
had died except Ben and
James. By the time he died about 1863, James had died and Ben was fighting in
the war and would not return, so any
estate he left after the
war probably went to the widows of these 2 sons. His will was probated in 1864
and is on file in the Court House in Columbus.
He is probably buried in
the family plot in Columbus MS (unmarked). A billfold that he once owned still

SC to Birley, Nancy 13937. An early family story said he
was an officer in the
Battle for New Orleans in the war of 1812 but the roster of troops at the
battle\ site doesn't mention his name. He became
wealthy for his time and
owned many slaves, several show horses and a 50 saw cotton gin. The gin must
have been hand-operated as it was only
appraised at $100. In
1836 Richard wrote a log detailed will giving things to many friends and
relatives and making special provision for a mulatto
slave woman named Mima
and her son Alfred (or Alford) to be provided with 50 acres of land and a
comfortable cabin.
Almost immediately he
wrote a codicil to the will revoking almost everything and leaving most of his
estate to his brother William. He did however,
remember Mima and Alfred
by providing that they be taken to one of the "free" states and
allowed to remain there if she wished. No one knows who
Alfred's father was.

Hamburg was located in
SC just across the river from Augusta Ga and is the area which was called
formerly south of Campbellton. He rented a ware
house (perhaps on lot
231) in Hamburg SC across from Augusta GA, See

John B. Covington's
family was already living in Alabama when he died and he may have been on a
trip back to South Carolina to take care of
some business. When John
Burnette Covington left Hamburg, SC after 1833, he first settled in Cherokee
Co. Alabama.
John Burnette Covington
was married to Lucilla Taylor b ca 1789 in SC. His descendants said that Mary
Fair, a half/sister of the Covington children,
daughter of Lucille and
Isaac Fair was married to a Mr Anderson (of Edgefield SC?) and it was said that
Mr Anderson was quite rich and left the
Covington children much
money but the Covington children reported that it never was trickled down or
made available to them. So Mary Fair, step
daughter to John Burnett
Covington, married Mr. Anderson and they had no children but left her Covington
half siblings money.
1810 Lucilla Fair widow
of Isaac Fair, living next to William Taylor (probably her father who was b ca
1750). Lucilla Fair has a young boy and a
young girl (Mary?). She
apparently married John Burnette Covington about 1815. Lucilla's daughter Mary
Fair and her unknown brother went along
to Alabama.
