In 1951, Covington was
charged along with his wife Florence, with the manslaughter of his son Colin
David at Abergavenny Assizes. An extract from
the News of the World
Press Library can be found on Colin David section. They denied manslaughter but
pleaded guilty to neglect which was
accepted by the
prosecution.
He was sentenced to 4
months imprisonment with his wife receiving a 9 month stretch. Covington was
described as a wagon repairer in court.
Detective Sargeant
Clifford Hill informed the court that Covington had told him "The baby
always seemed thin. He did not gain weight but grew
longer. When I noticed
how painfully thin he was I told the wife to take him to the doctor. She took
him to the clinic but nobody was there so she
came home". The
couple who had two other children at the time, were described as living in two
rooms which were filthy.

"A Sunshine Coast
man who was yesterday awarded more than $2 million in damages in the biggest
payout yet to a survivor of the Voyager disaster
43 years ago said he
felt "vindicated".
But after his 12-year
court battle he said he also felt betrayed by his own Government's handling of
the issue.
Peter Covington-Thomas,
65, of Maroochydore, said that while he was still on tenterhooks wondering
whether the Commonwealth would appeal
against the payout, he
hoped it would be the "finality" he had been seeking for so long.
"I feel vindicated –
it's been a long time in happening," he said. "The accident happened
in February 1964 and I've been in the legal system since
1995. It's a fair amount
of time and it's been a lot of trauma."
Mr Covington-Thomas's
legal counsel James Taylor, who has fought for compensation for up to 200 other
survivors since 1983, said the latest payout
was so large because it had finally been
proven that able seamen such as Mr Covington-Thomas would have had long careers
in the Navy and
pensions for life if not
for the disaster.

"The Commonwealth
has stonewalled us all the way."
Mr Taylor said.
"But we now know from statistics that were blocked before that more than
90 per cent of servicemen who had done service for nine
years went on to serve
for 20 years and were entitled to pensions for life."
The payout decision,
handed down by Justice David Kirby yesterday in the NSW Supreme Court continued
the long list of damages claims in the
wake of the 1964
collision between the aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne and destroyer HMAS
Voyager which killed 82 men.
Mr Taylor said Mr
Covington-Thomas, who was just 19 when the disaster happened during exercises
off the NSW coast, had suffered severe post
traumatic stress
disorder as well as acute depression and anxiety.
Mr Covington-Thomas said
he still had flashbacks every day of that fateful night when as a crewman on
the Melbourne he was one of the first
rescuers alongside the
Voyager, which had been cut in half by the impact.
"The whole night
was just a nightmare and still is," he said.
Mr Covington-Thomas said
he was angry and frustrated that the Commonwealth had dragged out the
compensation process for so long.
He urged others fighting
for compensation to "stay the course".
"It's so important
- you need to be taken care of," he said.
Most other survivors of
the Voyager disaster have received
compensation payments of
$1 million to about $1.25 million.

"ELEANOR HALL: The
New South Wales Supreme Court has awarded more than $2-million in damages to a
Queensland man who survived the
Voyager naval disaster
more than 40 years ago.
Eighty-two men were
killed in the collision between HMAS Melbourne and HMAS Voyager in 1964.
Peter Covington-Thomas
survived the horrific crash on board the Melbourne*, but he later suffered
post-traumatic stress and his naval career also
suffered.
Today the 65-year-old
won his case against the Commonwealth and received the biggest payout so far
awarded over the maritime disaster.
Mr Covington-Thomas has
been speaking to Nicole Butler about his win in court.
NICOLE BUTLER: Mr Covington-Thomas,
how do you feel today, now that this has finally been settled?
PETER COVINGTON-THOMAS:
Well, I'll see some light at the end of the tunnel of course, providing that
the ADF (Australian Defence Force)
doesn't put me through
the trauma of waiting to find out whether they're going to appeal it or not,
which is their right to do of course. But, you know,
that's going to be
pretty traumatic for me, and I think I've been put through the mill for quite
long enough actually.
NICOLE BUTLER: How long
has this been going on?
PETER COVINGTON-THOMAS:
Ah, the accident was on the 10th of February 1964, and I went into the legal
system in 1995.
NICOLE BUTLER: So as
well as suffering distress of the accident, you've had a lot of stress with the
legal ramifications?
PETER COVINGTON-THOMAS:
That's correct.
NICOLE BUTLER: How did
the accident affect you?
PETER COVINGTON-THOMAS:
Ah, very touchy on a subject which is something that I do not like to discuss
about too much because it brings too
much pain forward from
the actual night of the accident.
You know, I've had to go
through so many times about telling people about this, telling not only legal
people but the medical profession to reach
this point, and if
anybody's been through anything traumatic they'll understand where I'm coming
from. You don't want to re-talk about or re-live it.
So it's affected me for
many, many, many years, yeah.
NICOLE BUTLER: Do you
feel now that this court decision has come down, even though there's an appeal
possibly pending, do you feel this will
help you move forward?
PETER COVINGTON-THOMAS:
Yes, because this brings a finality to it, and I need that finality to try and
push on with the rest of my life.
NICOLE BUTLER: The
compensation amount, $2-million, that will obviously help you with medical care
and it recognises what you've been
through. Are you happy
with that amount?

Yes, but one has to consider that I've had a legal team working with me since
1995, and they well and truly earned
their money. So that,
you know, if people out there saying "oh wow, this man's just got
$2-million", they've got to understand that there are legal

weighed 5lb 9oz when he
was born, and three months later his weight should have been 13lb. It was 5lb
8oz - one ounce less than at birth - and he
died of starvation. A
doctor gave this evidence yesterday at Abergavenny, Monmouthshire.. Colin's
parents, 27 year old Donald Roy Covington and
his 24 year-old wife
Florence, of Flannel Street, Abergavenny were found guilty of negligence and
sentenced to 4 months and 9 months
respectively.
Dr Edward Jordan told
the court that he had twice treated Mrs Covington at her home for jaundice, and
neither she nor her husband asked him to
look at the baby.
Giving evidence about
the baby's weight at death on June 24th, Dr Dennis Lyons said he had to rub
hard with cotton wool to remove dirt of many
days standing. He could
see no fat on the whole body. There was no trace of disease. The child died of
debility due to starvation.
"It must have been
apparent to the average intelligence for at least a fortnight that the child
was going to die, and grossly apparent during the week
before death. Skilled
care could have saved him in the last week" sid the doctor. A neighbour
Mrs Clara Knight said she thought "the child was a
lovely baby when it came
from hospital. A month later it did not look so well"
