WILLIAM COVINGTON. Ref: 10775. Born: during 1725 at Virginia VA. Father: not known, Father Ref: 0. Mother: not known, Mother Ref: 0. Died:

during 1817 at Franklin Co GA aged 92. Mar: around 1747 at Amelia Co VA to Walker, Mary . Most research suggests his wife's name was Mary

although views are split as to whether she was a Walker or a Morgan. I've gone for Walker as this was the given middle name to their first born son.

According to the DePriest Family Journal there is said to be in existence a book in the reserved section of the Shelby NC public library, Barar's or

Beard's Revolutionary War, which contained information on William and his activities in the Revolution.

There is a least one researcher who feels his name is Thomas. The name of William as the father of Thomas, Josiah, and William has come down

through both Thomas' and William's descendants.

William's family lived along the Dan River in Virginia near Danville. This on the NC-VA border with present day Rockingham County on the NC side.

A number of Covington families lived in this region on both sides of the border. Some were descendants of Nehemiah Covington of MD while others

appear to descend from William Covington of Essex Co., VA. As the given names were similar in both families, at this time there is no evidence to

suggest from which line William is descended. Just before or after the Revolution many of William's children, and possibly William himself, moved to

Rutherford Co., NC where his daughter Ursula already lived with her husband John Walker. William himself moved on to GA where he died in 1817.

Indeed there is some confusion as to who William's sons were. At least five sons have been attributed to him: Thomas, John, Josiah, William and

Richard. According to A. B. C. DePriest "William. Covington and three brothers came to North Carolina prior to the Revolutionary War from near

Danville, VA. One brother settled near Rockingham, NC, one came to Cleveland County, and the other went on to TN or KY. William Covington had

several sisters. One, named Urusula married John Walker; another sister married a Moore in Rutherford County in 1800 and they went to Georgia

(actually western NC on the GA border, LW). There were several other sisters." [As told by A. B. C. DePriest to Virginia DePriest in December 1964.]

According to Nevora Covington Nush files: He came from Danville VA either before or right after the Revolutionary War to Mooresboro in Rutherford

Co NC. He is found on the Rutherford County tax list and the 1790 Census for Morgan District, in which it was reported that he lived with 3 females.

He bought land in 1795 (Deed Book M-Q/241)

It is reported in the book "Covington's Remembered" that he served in Capt John Nelson Co. of Militia and James Martin's Co. at Battle of Moore's

Creek. Copies of his hand-written wills are in existence for himself and his son William. They are said to be in the possession of Steve Covington in

Winston Salem NC in 1999.

He married twice. He married first Rhoda McIntyre about 1795. Rhoda was born about 1771. Rhoda died 1 March 1841. They had no children.

While Rhoda's lineage is not know, she is probably a descendent of Alexander McEntire, possibly the daughter of Aaron McEntire and a first wife

and hence a cousin of William's second wife. While married to Rhoda, William witnessed legal documents for Alexander's sons and was the executor

of Aaron's estate.

He married second Mary Rincie Green in March of 1841. Polly was born in Rutherford Co., NC 21 November 1811. She was the daughter of James

L. Green and Sarah Moss. Polly died 29 November 1902 in Cleveland Co., NC, at 91 years of age.

William and Polly were married two or three weeks after William's first wife Rhoda died. When asked why they married so quickly, Polly is said to

have responded that she had to marry him because people where already carrying off all his belongings! William became a father for the first time

at 66. He was 80 when his youngest child was born.

In 1797 William purchased land on the east side of Brushy Creek of the First Broad River. In the ensuing years his brothers or nephews Thomas and

John bought land nearby.

The red headed William was a surveyor and very civilly involved. In 1841, he played an important role in the formation of Cleveland County from

Lincoln and Rutherford Counties. In 1843, he was instrumental in laying out the town of Shelby, the county seat. William served with Isaac Irvine,

George Cabaniss, Samuel Bailey, Yancey Reisendine and Thomas Roberts from Rutherford County and John Neil, James S. Oates, John Roberts,

Robert Falls, Joshua Beam, and William Graham of Lincoln County to form the new county. After the formation of the county, William also served

on the first Board of County Commissioners.

William, Rhoda and Polly are buried together between Shelby and Polkville in the Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. The verse on William's tombstone

reads

at Johnson Co TX to White (McPherson), Susan 10800. Josiah Covington may have actually married for second time (that marriage being to Susan

McPherson Rayburn/Raburn) in what is now Hood County, Texas with recording of 1855 marriage in Johnson County. This 1855 marriage was

probably his second. Judge Davis' notes in Hood County Library, Granbury, Texas say his given name was also spelled Joshua (E.P. Abbott Affidavit

of 20 Oct 1921) and Josiah (1878 Tax List).

His name is spelled "Josiah" on Johnson County, Texas Marriage Records and "Joseph" on 1880 Mortality Schedule, Page 118, Precinct 5, Hood

County, Texas and on Sallie Covington Guiles' Death Certificate. His tombstone probably shows "Josiah" with date of death as 5 Sep 1879.

Shown as Josiah Covington on 1878 Tax List, Hood County Abstract No. 498, Jno Schroder Survey, probably had 20 acres.

Federal Census for 1830, Rutherford County, North Carolina shows a Josiah Covington with 1 male under 5, but the ages for him and his wife do not

appear to be shown. One Covington Researcher speculates that where two males, 20-30 are shown on this Census, there is an error. This particular

entry should be shown as one male and one female. Federal 1850 Census Records, Williamson Co, Texas and taken 23 Aug 1850 show Josiah

Covington's age as 41, which, if correct, would give birth year of 1808/1809. While this brings some doubt as to whether this is the same Josiah

Covington who is later found in Hood County, Texas, he probably is.

Note that on this same Census, his wife, Unity, is shown as 39, but on the 1870 Census for Burnet County, Texas she is shown as 63, indicating her

age is incorrect on either the 1850 or 1870 Census. Josiah's age could be wrong on 1850 Census, 1880 Mortality Schedule or perhaps on his

gravestone.

Neither Josiah Covington nor his subsequent family are shown on Hood or Johnson County, Texas Censuses for 1860 or 1870. Was he in Oklahoma

as indicated by "The Covington Explosion;" did he really think Unity Fendren Covington was deceased in 1855 when he married Susan McPherson

Rayborn; was there some reason (possibly legal) that he could not contact his grandchildren then--if he is the same Josiah Covington why did he not

contact grandchildren of his first marriage to find out whether Unity Fendren Covington was really dead; did he go on Hood County Tax Roll in 1878

because first wife, Unity Fendren Covington, was then deceased; was his given name perhaps spelled variously (Josiah, Joseph, Joshua) to

deliberately confuse? See "The Covington Explosion" comments, page 10ff.

According to a will signed by Josiah Covington, Sr. of Rutherford County, North Carolina on 6 Mar 1818, son Josiah (Jr.) was not then "of age." This

would tend to confirm that Josiah Covington, Jr. (the presumed Hood County Josiah Covington) was then under 21, so he could have been born as

early as 1797. This could indicate that the Josiah Covington (Jr.) birth date of 1 Jan 1798 as shown on his gravestone in Long Creek Cemetery, Hood

County, Texas is correct.

He is shown on 1873 Registered Voters Precinct 1 List for 1873, Hood County, Texas and is listed there as Josiah Covington as reprinted by HCGS in

February 1990.

Further research carried out by Dorothy Bernay of Colorado suggests his 2nd wife was named Susan White not Susan McPherson. See explanation in

Article on page 1, column 2, of the June 27, 1863 issue of the Richmond Sentinel newspaper, Richmond, Virginia.

"When Gen. Jackson was wounded, his cap and the gloves which he wore, were left on the field where his injuries were first examined. They were

there found by a soldier of company G, 38th North Carolina regiment, Pender’s brigade. His name is Wm. D. H. Covington, and he is now in

Chimborazo Hospital. Mr. Covington carefully preserved the interesting articles, and though offered large sums for them by those who wished to

possess these momentoes of our great General, he was fixed in his purpose of delivering them to his family. Through the aid of his Surgeon, Dr.

Bowen, he has found the opportunity of sending the gloves. The cap is with Gen. Pender.

We have seen the gloves. “T. J. Jackson, Virginia,” is printed neatly on the wrist of each. The course of the fatal ball that wounded the wearer, is

seen on both. – The right-hand glove is cut by the ball just about the base of the thumb, but so near the edge as apparently just to have grazed the

flesh. The left-hand glove was perforated on the wrist, near the top of the glove. The stain of the blood which flowed from the wound is still upon the

glove. The ball, after entering the wrist, ran up the arm, rendering necessary its amputation above the elbow.

Mr. Covington's nice feelings and sense of honor in reference to these relics are much to be commended. Such a soldier is worthy to have such a

General as Jackson was."

Thomas Baxter DePriest was born in Rutherford Co., NC 29 May 1847. T. B. died 22 Feb 1907 in NC, at 59 years of age. His body was interred 1907

in Salem Methodist Church Cemetery, Rutherford Co., NC.

After serving in the Civil War, T. B. returned to his native Rutherford County to find Reconstruction was quite rough and turbulent there with Klan

violence being commonplace. He therefore chose to start a store and live in neighboring Cleveland County. He bought 25 acres, a store and a two-

room cabin in New House, Cleveland County, NC. T. B. was a merchant and farmer. It was in Cleveland County he met Mandy Covington who lived

nearby.

He married Manda Jane Covington 19 Sep 1876. After their marriage T. B. and Mandy built a new home on their land. According the family lore,

this new house was where the community of New House acquired its name. They had 10 children.

Mandy Covington was born in Rutherford Co., NC 28 Sep 1855. Mandy Covington was the daughter of William Covington and Mary Rincie Green.

Mandy Covington died 18 Feb 1945 in NC, at 89 years of age. Her body was interred 1945 in Salem Methodist Church Cemetery, Rutherford Co.,

NC. According to the notes of A.B.C. DePriest, her given name was Manda Jane, not Amanda Jane. She was called "Mandy". She married Thomas

Baxter DePriest in Cleveland Co., NC, 19 Sep 1876. After Tom died, Mandy married a man named Ware, but she did not live with him long.

Though they never divorced, she insisted that she be called Mrs. DePriest, not Mrs. Ware.

"My great aunt, Lillie Whitlock, late of Jefferson, Ga., and a sister of Jeff, knew your great, great, great grandmother, she called her Elizabeth A.,

personally. Aunt Lillie died about 10 or 12 years ago, but I knew her well and she talked many times about her father's family.

She told me that Elizabeth A. (you show her name to have been Elisheba) was called Sara by those who knew her, and that she married Stephen

Cowart in Gordon County on August 12, 1866. She told me about the mental problems and that Sara was finally committed to the sanitarium in

Milledgeville. In fact, she (Aunt Lillie) and her father, James Monroe, visited Sara once while she was committed.

Children were: William Erwin Cowart, b. September 28, 1869; d. January 16, 1943. And Lular Cowart, b. July 15, 1871."

Covington) - On Aug. 19, 1965, Joe and Veria went to Dimmitt to attend the evening wedding of Lester and Estel Dowell's daughter, Jeri Mac. After

the wedding, they were going to Lester and Estel's for a little visit before going back to Amarillo. As they drove down the highway, this is what

happened, according to what Uncle Joe told me (Albin):

Lester and Estel were living on a farm 2 1/2 miles south of Dimmitt and they had been to town at the church for Jeri's wedding. On the way home,

Uncle Joe and Aunt Veria Covington were in a car just ahead of them. Joe was going a little slow because he didn't want to miss the driveway.

According to Uncle Joe, Lester came up behind him, (they did not know it was Lester going around them, until they rushed to the car and tried to

help), apparently thinking to go around and show the way. Joe said that just as Lester started to pass, suddenly there was a car coming from the other

way. This highway is pretty level for a mile or so from their house so vision was not impaired. Joe and Veria were convened that the kids in the car

were driving without lights and suddenly turned them on.

Lester swerved, clipped the back of Joe's car, which threw him back into the path of the other car and they hit head-on. Lester and Estel were killed

almost, if not instantly. Imogene's legs were pinned and bleeding badly. By the time they got her out and the ambulance headed for Amarillo, it

was too late. She died just about the time they hit the Amarillo city limits. Joe and Veria were not hurt.

was known as Jack. How this came to be is interesting. When he was about to be born, another lady in the area was also expecting. An old mule-

skinner said there would be a boy and a girl born, and they would be called Jack and Jenny. Grandmother said , "No way!" the other lady had a girl

and named her Jenny. Grandmother named him William Starling and said, "Let's see them get Jack out of that". He was called Jack all of his life.

He wanted to go the Alaska back in the '20s and '30s, but the depression and then six children wouldn't let him. I (Albin) graduated high school in

1951 and went into the Navy in 1952. That left only Tom and Marie at home. Tom was a senior and Marie a junior. In Sept. 1952, Dad quit his job

as Bridge Inspector for the Pecos Division of the AT&SFRY at Clovis, NM and went to Anchorage, AK and went to work for the Alaska RR as a section

foreman.

After several years he left the Alaska RR and went to work for the White Pass and Yukon RR at Skagway, AK. He worked as section foreman, pumper,

and B&B foreman. they retired and moved up to Tom's homestead at Willow, AK. They later moved to a Pioneer home in Palmer , AK where he
