   25/7/1755. He has been described as a man of extra-ordinary strength and activity up to advanced age. He was said to have left a good property of

   lands and houses adjacent to Sevenoaks, and was described in the Poll Roll of 1734 as a freeholder of Sevenoaks.

   Church, Droitwich 17 June 1764. Nothing is known of his education or early training but for some time before his death he was in the Excise,

   engaged as Collector of Revenue derivable from the salt works of Nantwich and Droitwich. He left no will but is stated to have encumbered the

   Died: 18 Jan 1837 at Walworth aged 73.  Mar: Nov 1801 at Walworth to Baiseley, Susannah 4193. Christened: 15 Jul 1763 at St Andrew, Droitwich,

   Worcester, England. Married at the delightfully named St Anne's by the Wardrobe in London. He died of the effects of influenza at the house of his

   daughter Elizabeth (Harris) at Mansel Street, London or Greenwood, Hadley Wood, Herts (?).

  

   He was educated at Wellesbourne Grammar School. He sold the encumbered property said to have been inherited from his grandfather, through his

   father. Left England for Antigua, West Indies shortly after having attained his majority, say about 1784/85 and to have stayed there for sixteen years

   as a merchant and in sugar production. He returned to England in 1801 and married. Some time later he acquired house property in Penton Street,

   Walworth, Newington Butts. It would seem probable that James settled his wife in Walworth, not far from Blackfriars Road, and thence made

   periodial visits back to Antigua with which island he is stated to have maintained a connection until about 1813/14, 30 years after he first went out

   there.

  

   His day-book, written up in Antigua for the period Feb to June 1813 state different cotracts and banking business, dealing in foreign exchange and

   the purchase and discounting of bills of exchange from London. After his return to England nothing is known of him until 1825 when he and his wife

   were in lodgings in Boulogne. In 1827 James son, James (2345) was managing his father's business affairs in London, collecting rents, paying

   insurance, making investments and sending him remittances in Boulogne. He banked with the "Bank of Jones and Lloyd, 43 Lothbury".

  

   In 1831 James was in London and it may be assumed that after his wife's deah, the family had returned to live in England. In 1833 and 1834 he

   was living in Edinburgh, where his youngest son, Charles William, was studying medicine. At that time, although over 70, he was still able to take a

   daily walk of about six miles around the city. Both in Antigua and on the London Exchange he was known by the soubriquet of "honest old Jemmy

   Chapel, Blackfriars Road-Lady Huntingdons, Southwark, Surrey, England. Emigrated to Canada in June 1836, last address being Simcoe, Ontario,

   Canada. 1st wife died , 29 March 1830, whilst giving birth to a daughter who lived for just a few seconds.

  

   At 9 years of age James was sent to boarding school in Warwickshire. Later he went to the Fulneck School, Pudsey near Leeds. Later still he was

   articled to a Mr Richard Peyton, agent of the Earl of Warwick. Afterwards with a surveyor in Isleworth ehere his duties were mainly routine, plan

   drafter and collecting rents etc on the Duke of Northumberland's Estate, Syon Gardens, Harpenden and elsewhere. His diary survives today.

  

   James and Elizabeth, his 2nd wife, lived in Chapel House, Wargrave. In June 1836, James, Elizabeth and their 2 sons left England for Canada. At

   that time James was 31 and they went to live at Dryden, four miles out of Simcoe, Ontario. During the American Civil War he was Captain and

   Second-in-Command of the local volunteers. In 1871, for a short while, he was Deputy Clerk of Simcoe County Council and a supervisor of local

   schools. In 1881 Canadian Census he lived at Charlottesville, Norfolk South, Ontario

   at Penton Street, Walworth, England. Christened 11 Oct 1813 at St Mary, Newington, Surrey, England. Whilst living with his parents in Boulogne-

   sur-Mer, France he was educated at the College presided over by the Abbe Haffrange. Graduated MD at the University of St Andrews in March 1835

   and in Aug of same year obtained membership of Royal College of Surgeons of London and in April 1836 became the Licenciate of Society of

   Apothecaries. Left England for Canada in Spring of same year.

  

   Private pupil for 3 years with Dr McKellar of Battersea. Subsequent medical education at Windmill St School, London and University of Edinburgh

   from 1833 to 1835. Ex-President of College of Physicians and Surgeons and Chairman of Board of Examiners of Province of Ontario, Canada.

   Professor, successively of Hygiene and Medical Jurisprudence of Medical Dept of Trinity College University. Ex-Chairman of Provincial Health,

   Ontario. Author of a text book on Hygiene officially adopted by 2nd learning schools in Canada. Medical adviser of various Insurance Co's and other

   big institutions.

  

   He was not a politician but due to his character, science and personal merits was officially appointed by different Canadian Governments on several

   occasions. Also represented Canada in Medical Congress held in London about 1891-92, presided by the Prince of Wales (later to become King

   Edward VII). He was then 78 years of age and was accompanied by his daughter, Alice Grace. They were received by the Prince, who gratified him

   enormously by saying that he, the Prince, remembered meeting him when he visited Toronto on his Canadian tour.

  

   He settled in the Simcoe area of Ontario and died at 404 Huron Street, Toronto.

   CHARLES JAMES COVERNTON. Ref: 2346. Born: 14 Oct 1832 at Chapel Hse, Wargrave. Father: James, Father Ref: 2345. Mother: Craggs,

   Elizabeth, Mother Ref: 4902.  Died: 18 Apr 1890 at Knighton aged 57.  Mar: Jul-Sep 1859 at Chorlton to Heath, Jane 4347. Emigrated to Canada

   in June 1836 with brother James and his family when he was 3 years and 8 months old.. He took his schooling at Upper Canada College and

   returned to England in 1853. On his return he studied medicine at Edinburgh University before serving on various ships. Qualified as a doctor of

   medicine.In 1857 he was doctor on the P & O SS Ava and was in Calcutta during August of that year where he heard much about the horros of the

   Indian Mutiny. A little earlier he is understood to have been surgeon on troopships to Turkey and the Crimea during the war with Russia. He was a

   very fine, strong man, over 6ft 2ins in height and powerfully built.

  

    In 1958 Jane Heath was asked by her sister, Mary Sophia Hall, to act as escort to the latter's eldest child, Edward Allicock Hall, on a sea voyage

   which he had been recommended to take for his health. It was on this voyage that she met Charles James who was ship's doctor on the vessel. After

   their marriage in 1859 they lived for a time at Gosport, nearSouthampton, where their eldest child Bessie Mary Edith was born.

  

   Charles James continued to go to sea for a time, but in 1860 Jane heard from her brother-in-law, Isacc Hall, of the possibilites of a medical practice

   at Knighton. This was reported to be worth £460 a year with a population of 2000 and he eventually acquired it. The practice stayed in his hands for

    the rest of his life. In his latter years he became a County Councillor, Chairman of the Finance Committee and Distric Medical Officer of Health.

  

   His death at the early age of 57 was robably caused by appendicitus, no operation being performed. It is estimated that at least 1000 people

   attended his funeral. He is buried at the St Edwards Churchyard in Knighton. His old house is to become a heritage house as doctors have lived in it

   continuously since 1860.

   with his father and uncle, June 1836. He spent his childhood in Canada and was educated in some local Canadian school, probably Upper Canada

   College. Subsequently he obtained employment in Canada and later in the United States, but conditions made permanent work difficult to obtain

   and he was persuaded by his brother to return to England about 1861.

  

   Eventually he was taken on by Messrs S & H Harris of Mansell Street, London in whose service he remained all his active working life. In 1874 lived

   at 10 Highbury Grange, Highbury Park, N.London and in 1883 at 21 Aberdeen Park, N.London  (London P.O. Directory 1874-1897)(Bretts

   Distinguished People). Appears in 1901 Census living in Lewisham employed as a Blackning & Polish Manufacturer

   Husband, son of Henry Drayton of Beckenham, Kent was a captain in a West India Regiment and later a lawyer. In 1868 he was a barrister and he

   Graduated as a doctor from Toronto University 1868. He served as a doctor in Civil War (North Army) USA. Left Canada for England towards end of

   1868 in a sailing vessel and in the same way from England to Buenos Aires en route for Chile, but once in Buenos Aires some of the leading

   Argentine doctors, amongst them William Rawson, a leader in politics and Congress, got him to stay in Argentina.

  

   His diploma confirmed by Buenos Aires Authorities passing exams and started to practice thereand in the city of Rosario. He succeeded well, made a

    small fortune and in 1881 lost it as gaurantor to a Scottish friend. The National and Provincial governments offered him in different occasions

    Germans when they occupied the island.. His war memoirs are said to be in the King's College Department of Military Studies Library. Thought to

   son of Hugh Selby Covernton, a much-loved family doctor at the turn of the century in Gawler, a small town some forty kilometres north of Adelaide.

   Two years after graduation John himself became a general practitioner in that same town, and rapidly identified himself with the life of this rural

   community. A warm and enthusiastic personality, devoted to his flock, he still somehow found time to carry out a family study on myotonia (for which

    he was subsequently awarded the MD in 1947), and to pass the examination for Membership of The Royal Australasian College of Physicians that

   same year.

  

   After seventeen years in general practice John moved in 1951 to Adelaide to work as a specialist physician in a suburban group practice, which

   enabled him to give more time to the Adelaide Children's Hospital where he had been appointed an honorary assistant physician in 1948. The

   Paediatric Refresher Week, now an important annual event in the Hospital's postgraduate activities, was largely due to his inspiration and drive.

  

   In 1963 John gave up private practice to take up the newly-created post of consultant paediatrician in the State Department of Mental Health, but

   retained his honorary links with the Adelaide Children's Hospital. At his instigation the hospital created a diagnostic and assessment unit for mentally

    retarded children to co-ordinate with the new government service that he was directing.

  

   The next chapter in his life opened when John became the medical director of the Mothers' and Babies' Health Association in 1966, a position

   which permitted him to continue as consultant paediatrician to the State Department of Mental Health. In this period he was able to set up a system

   of pre-school examinations which eventually became state-wide.

  

   At various stages in his career he was a consulting paediatrician at the Northfield Infectious Diseases Hospital, an honorary paediatrician at the

   Queen Victoria Maternity Hospital, a member of the Postgraduate Committee in Medicine, and a member of the South Australian state committee

   of the College.

  

   He will be remembered for his stimulating ideas, his enthusiasm, and his tenacity of purpose, which was not immediately obvious because of his

   disarming friendliness and charm. He had a happy family life and was the devoted father of five daughters. His death came from cardiac failure

   She graduated from Simon Fraser University in about 1972 with an honours degree in History. With that, she was well-equipped to become a letter

   carrier, so she did that for a year. She went to the B.C. Institute of Technology for Broadcast Journalism and then worked as a tv reporter, assignment

   In 1978, she took off for Jamaica where she lived for three months and started writing her first novel. Then back to work -- dishwasher, researcher, and

    back to journalism at CBC Toronto and then BCTV again. 1984 she quit again to write and to try to find some children. In 1985 she and John

   adopted one son in Vancouver, and in 1987 another in Peru. That kept her busy for the next twenty or so years. But she kept writing.

  

   In 2009, she and John moved to Roberts Creek."

   Trained as a newspaper journalist but switched to publishing after taking up a position with Berkeley Publishers in London.  From 1975 to 1980 she

   worked as a general and educational editor for Rigby Limited in Adelaide.  In 1981 she left Rigby to set up the specialist children’s book publishing

   house, Omnibus Books, with co-founder Sue Williams.  In the years that followed, Sue and Jane published many Australian classics, including One

   woolly wombat, Possum magic, Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge, I went walking, Space demons and Rowan of Rin. By 1991 their considerable

   success led them to sell Omnibus Books to Scholastic Australia where they remained for seven years as joint general managers and publishers.

  

   In 1997 they left their famous imprint behind to set up a new children’s picture book company, Working Title Press. Since 2001, Jane Covernton has

   been sole director and publisher of Working Title Press.  She remains committed to developing the work of new authors and illustrators and

   showcasing the works of Australia’s finest creators to the rest of the world.

  

   Her "Four and twenty lamingtons: a collection of Australian nursery rhymes" (1988) led the way to collections of rhymes, chants and songs that are

   peculiarly Australian.

   "Natasha Covernton, an administrator at the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, says plans to rebuild the country's shattered housing

   stock and infrastructure have had to be put on hold while aid agencies deal with the flood of returning refugees. Instead, the commission is handing

   out shelter kits – containing 20-30 wooden poles, a door and two window frames as well as nails and tools – to allow people to rebuild their homes

   before the onset of winter. It had originally planned to distribute 97,000 kits, but it now urgently requires funds to provide more.

  

   The situation is similar in Kosovo, where ethnic Albanians who fled ethnic cleansing are finally returning to their villages to find their houses

   destroyed. In the village of Biti e Ulët in Strpce province, 100 Albanians are attempting to rebuild their damaged homes before the winter.

  

   "All we need is a little assistance," one of the villagers – a 54-year-old father of seven called Miliam – told the UNHCR's website. "A little bit of

   concrete and bricks would really go a long way. We can reconstruct the houses ourselves." In situations like these, financial donations are more

   useful than Western construction expertise. "We try to get local people to do the construction," says the Covernton. "If the construction industry wants

   to help, the best thing it can do is donate money."

  

   Longer term, bodies such as the UNHCR will require experienced industry personnel to help rebuild Afghanistan's infrastructure but Covernton points

   out that getting selected for the work is not easy: "Competition is really tough and there's a really complicated selection procedure. We need to make

    sure the work is spread out between different countries – not all going to British engineers, for instance." (Building.co.uk article 2002 entitled "Wish

   Sometimes the most inspiring landscapes can be found in your own backyard. For Vancouver musicians 41st and Home inspiration comes from

   everyday relationships, long drives and hours spent writing together in a small, carless garage somewhere on 41st avenue.

  

   For the greater part of the past year the band have holed themselves away in a Burnaby studio, crafting the makings of their debut album “Left In

   Places.” The 8 track CD is a compilation of their past and present, taking cues from contemporary DIY folk and indie rock. The songs are layered with

   rich instrumentation and narrative lyrics influenced by the landscape and everyone in it; from the bittersweet “Box and the Bee” to “Great Bear,” a

   driving tribute to the Canadian wilderness. In support of their work the band will be embarking on a western Canadian tour in the summer of 2010,

   including a release party with BC talent Aidan Knight, We Are The City and In Medias Res, as well as a Calgary showcase in mid-June (sponsored by

    Steamwhistle Brewing).

  

   Though the current roster has been playing together for a year, the group was started by drummer Garth Covernton and singer-songwriter Thom Kolb

    in mid 2008. Joined by bassist and audio engineer George Knuff, the band has matured in terms of songwriting and instrumentation; experimenting

    with their sound in studio and at their practice space. They are joined by a rotating cast of musicians such as violinist Sejal Lal and multi-

      A review for TV Week magazine, Feb 2009 for debut album from Karen Larsen "Fire & Ice" - Local chanteuse with a rapturous voice and

   beautifully crafted country-tinged songs. Shawn Colvin and Emmylou Harris spring to mind, especially given the crisp, uncluttered production and

   deeply personal lyrics. Mercifully free of annoying samples, ersatz twang and “the Nashville Sound.” Authentic Canadiana played on instruments of

   With the exception of Liza Minnelli, Weird Al Yankovic and Norwegian death-metal bands, musicians hate being “pigeonholed” — Vancouver

   singer/songwriter Karen Larson harbors no such concerns. She doesn’t mind being pigeonholed as a singer/songwriter, because that is exactly what

   she is. Her debut album 'Fire and Ice', showcasing some of Vancouver's finest musicians, Eric Reed, Geoff Hicks, Rob Becker, Pat Covernton, Mani

   Nassefat, showcases both her rich, soulful vocals and gift for moving seamlessly between rootsy country-tinged pop and smoldering jazzy blues.

   Karen Larson is a talented songwriter that digs deep for her lyrics and turns the personal into the universal, using firsthand incidents as launch pads

   to an emotional realm familiar to all. Larson’s honesty translates well.

  

   Her performances, with her guitar and her husband/pianist, Pat Covernton, or with a band, attest to her ability to reach audiences. Not surprisingly,

   the release of Fire and Ice (the title track is the album’s first single) coincides with an ever-increasing number of club, concert and festival

   appearances and songwriters shows including — Grrrls with Guitars, Afternoon of Music Festivals, Songwriters in the Round — as well as events like

   the Vancouver Jazz Festival, the Manitoba Stampede, the Kimberley Music Festival, the Vancouver East and Richmond Cultural Centres, the

   Douglas College Theatre and Vancouver’s beautiful St. James Hall.  She's organized, hosted and performed at the twenty week concert series

   'Music4Food' for the Vancouver Food Bank.
